2020 Education Award Ceremony Application

The Laotian American Society (LAS) is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities for outstanding Laotian college students. The amount and number of scholarships are based on LAS’s overall fundraising income and, consequently, will change from year to year.Applicants will be considered based on:

  • Academic Achievements
  • Community Service
  • Essays
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Financial Need

Eligibility

To be eligible, the applicant must satisfy the following minimum requirements:

  1. Must be part Laotian
  2. Must be a college student (rising freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior)
  3. Must be a Georgia resident
  4. Must be currently enrolled in or accepted to an undergraduate degree program or associates degree program at an accredited university, community or technical college
  5. Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  6. Cannot have been a recipient of the LAS Scholarship the previous year.

General Instructions

  1. Application package must be uploaded, submitted and/or postmarked no later than September 15, 2020.
  2. No application materials will be returned.
  3. Essays and personal resume must be typed.
  4. Applicant must provide an official letter of enrollment for the upcoming academic year from their accredited university, community college, or technical college.
  5. All information must be included within one application package. The package must include: original application, personal resume, essays, transcripts, and official letter of current enrollment.
  6. LAS Scholarship recipients will be announced via Live Stream September 30, 2020.

Essays

Answer the following questions. Your answer must be typed and in double-spaced format. Each essay should be no more than two (2) pages long.

  1. What is your life goal? What led you to make this choice and how will you achieve this goal?
  2. With the recent pandemic changing our community and society, how has that impacted your perspective of life and your views long term?
  3. As Laotian culture, traditions, and representation becomes more mainstream with contributions and efforts of many Laotian Americans from influencers to scholars, how will you be a contributing factor to advancing the Laotian momentum?

This information is to be used solely for the purpose of determining my eligibility for the LAS Scholarship. I agree to allow LAS to share the information I have provided with any other student aid funding source for which I may be eligible.

I authorize LAS to use my name for the purposes of community relations and program evaluation.

I give permission to LAS to use photographs or video footage of my participation in LAS Scholarship activities and related functions in educational and promotional materials benefiting various LAS Programs.

I understand that if I receive funds as a LAS Scholarship recipient, I will serve ten documented community service hours with the LAS or any other affiliated Laotian-based community organizations, completed by the end of the next calendar year.
